The Loren Hotel and Paggi House are thrilled to announce Paggi House’s next exhibition— Loaded,by visual artist and Texas native Erik Parker. Parker’s paintings and works on paper will be exhibited throughout Paggi House’s three exhibition spaces.

  • On view February 18 - June 7
  • Viewing by appointment only
  • Paggi House, 200 Lee Barton Drive

Born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1968 and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Parker describes himself as a “punk rock skater kid,” influenced early on by MAD Magazine and the DIY spirit of underground culture. He studied at the University of Texas at Austin under Peter Saul, whose rebellious spirit and independent approach to painting continues to resonate in Parker’s work.

The exhibition will include Parker’s signature dreamlike landscapes, funky cartoonish portraits, and layered word paintings dating from 2012 to the present.  Imagery reveals references to punk, hip hop, skateboarding, graffiti, and 1970s psychedelic aesthetics.  As well, the influences of satire, Surrealism, Pop, and Expressionism play a role in the work’s unique kaleidoscopic effect. This clashing of styles mimics the over saturation, density and pace of visualimagery today — “I am trying to make loaded paintings because we live in aloaded time.”

Parker has exhibited extensively throughout the world, with solo exhibitions at De Appel, Amsterdam; the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Fort Worth, TX; The Aldrich Museum, CT; Mary Boone Gallery, NY; Kasmin Gallery, NY; Nanzuka, Japan; Colette, Paris; and most recently at Veta Gallery, Madrid.  Parker has been awarded several honors throughout his career, including the Durhurst Family Scholarship (1997), Rose Scholarship (1997), and the Rema Hort-Mann Foundation Grant (1999). His work is in the permanent collections of The Brooklyn Museum, NY; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA; Montreal Museum of Fine Art, Canada; Faurschou Foundation, Copenhagen, DK. The artist currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NewYork.
